How I became a freelance writer

As this is my first post on Will Write For CakeHow I became a freelance writer, I thought I should explain how I came to take on the role of Freelance Writer.

Creative writing was the one thing I enjoyed at school. I loved it and was good at it but nobody ever told me I could make a career out of it. People like me (the thickos) were always pushed towards retail work. No chance of university or a decent career for us. I’m pleased to say that some of my “dumber” classmates went on to become very successful, so up yours school :-)

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I left school, so I did nothing. Then I remembered how much I enjoyed writing and for a while, that became my dream. I chased that dream for a few years with no joy before finally talking myself out of it.

Let the writing begin

A slew of boring retail and office based jobs later and I finally went mad.

I’d been unemployed for some time when I bumped into an old friend who had managed to become a marketer/copywriter. I spent more and more time visiting her and she spent a lot of time talking me through her business. She finally convinced me that I had the skills to take on this kind of work myself and thanks to to the UK Government and their New Deal scheme, I was given a nicely timed opportunity.

So now I’m a writer

I’ve been a freelance writer for a while now, but I’m still relatively new to it all. What I’m trying to do now is filter out all the writing jobs I don’t want. I thought I’d got it all figured out when I started, but that would have been too easy. I’ve tried things like networking  with no joy – something I’ll go into in a later post – and seem to be moving away from copywriting and toward work that’s more article based.

So, that’s where I’m at. I’ll be keeping you up to date with my progress, but I also want to officially invite all you other new writers to participate. If you’re just starting out on the journey or if you’re thinking about it, come along with me. I’ll be sharing news of my failures as well as my triumphs so you can learn from what I do and not from what I tell you to do.

If you have a comment or suggestion, just jump on in. I’m keen to know what you think and I want to know what you’ve tried, even if it didn’t work. There’s always something we can learn from each other.

Oh, and bring cake :-)
