Dropbox is hugely popular, so I think the chances of it closing without warning are very slim. But you're right, you shouldn't rely on it as your only method, it's just a back-up. Save to your hard drive, auto back-up to Dropbox or similar and at the end of the day, you can make an additional copy to a thumb drive. Belt and braces will save a lot of tears and the easier you make it on yourself, the better.

I installed Dropbox a few days ago but I've been a bit worried about relying on a 3rd party to keep my files safe and secure from hackers. What if Dropbox suddenly closes down without warning etc?

I guess the answer is to occasionally back up to my external hard drive. I do this now but not as frequently as I should. Anyway, I'll definitely be using Dropbox now you've recommended it so thanks for the advice Mr Uku. :-)

If I had a £1 for every time a strange woman has asked me to live with them...I'd have £3.25

Anyhoo, these two make backing up automatic which is fine as long you've got an internet connection. Also, I was reminded today that some software, Scrivener for example, saves your files automatically every 2 seconds. If that's happening and these things are backing up online at the same time, it may slow your system down. Better to not sync your files with a cloud service if you're using software like that. Instead, save to your hard drive and back up at the end of the day.

Great post! I'm one of those people who are scared of technical stuff and although a lot of it is probably straight forward, I back away from it. I'm guilty of not backing up as often as I should and use a memory stick. This sounds like a great alternative, especially if it updates as you change documents. Great post and great advice. Thanks for that. Yours, clueless! Oh PS. Can you come and live with me please? Ta! x
